Grant Overview

The Law Foundation welcomes grant applications from individuals and organizations. To be eligible, proposed projects must align with one or more of the statutory objects, be law-related, and provide meaningful benefits to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Grant decisions are made by the Board of Governors based on factors like consistency with the Foundation’s mission, community involvement and benefit, creativity, innovation, and availability of matching or alternative funding. Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Aid Commission Contributions

Part IV of the Law Society Act, 1999 states that the Law Foundation must transfer 2/3 of the net revenue received in each calendar year directly to the Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Aid Commission.

Projects or programs must be law-related, must benefit the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, and must fall within one or more of the Foundation’s statutory objects.

Both individuals and organizations based in Newfoundland and Labrador are welcome to apply, provided their proposed project or programme meets the eligibility criteria.

The Board considers whether the project aligns with the Foundation’s objectives, whether residents of the province are involved or will benefit, the degree of creativity and innovation, and whether alternative or matching funding is available.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Executive Director of the Foundation by email or telephone in order to discuss their concept before applying.

The statutory objects include legal education and legal research; law reform; establishment, operation and maintenance of a legal referral service; establishment, operation and maintenance of law libraries; provision of scholarships for legal matters; and assisting in funding the Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Aid Commission.

The grant application form is available for download on the Foundation’s website under the “Grants” section. Applicants should complete and submit the form in accordance with the instructions provided.

NL Legal Aid Commission Contributions

Part IV of the Law Society Act, 1999 states that the Law Foundation must transfer 2/3 of the net revenue received in each calendar year directly to the Newfoundland and Labrador Legal Aid Commission. For 2022, the Law Foundation made a mandatory contribution of $1,465,678 to Legal Aid.
